The Handshake Method
Recently I observed a shift change at an assembly line manufacturing plant. The results were stunning to say the least. Due to a carefree attitude of near minimum-wage employees and a loose attendance policy, the change was far from seamless. The result was an unbelievable 35-minute period of chaos determining who was available, who could run what machine and how to balance the true absenteeism. Let me put this into a little more important terms for you. If you run 5 days a week and 50 weeks a year (taking 10 days for holidays) that 35 minutes becomes 3.65 weeks or almost a month’s lost time of a shift in a year. Work in a 24/7 operation and you lost a shift for a quarter.

The example may be on the extreme side, every company loses production when the shifts change.
The solution requires change. While change is inevitable, it is the last thing anyone wants to go through or guide. To make a seamless transition, try “The Handshake Method”.
